[...] Anecdotally, again, I have really seen an increase in the number of brands that are using Twitter now. Sadly, I feel like many brands are f’ing things up. They start following people based on keywords. Yeah, they use automated services that “auto-follow” people on Twitter based on keywords. This feels a little like phishing to me (I know, not the same, but kinda the same concept). What’s equally unbearable, is that once they follow a person, they don’t use Twitter effectively as the communication medium it is. They use it to blast promotional messages, offer nothing to their followers, etc. I rant more about this in a previous post. [...]

Ha ha! Too true. Or a new casserole dish so she can make you something nice. Like any relationship, it can't just be about you, you selfish brand! Don't lure her in with roses and then never give her anything nice again. I love analogies : )

Agreed. I like that you mentioned facebook and youtube. For those I say, Give me content i want to watch! YouTube isn't a place to post your marketing and advertising droll. Not cause it takes adgantage or intrudes, but it dilutes content and makes people less likely to come back. To go back to your analogy. It's like one day bringing your lady roses (cool engaging video that speaks to your brand) and the next day bringing her a vacuum cleaner for her birthday...
